Black and Queer - In The Key Of Q (Special Episode)

I had the honor and pleasure of guest hosting an EXTREMELY important episode of the BEAUTIFUL podcast, InTheKeyOfQ. The podcast was created by Dan Hall as a way to give Queer Men in music/entertainment an opportunity to tell our stories. Growing up, Hall saw that there weren’t many out queer men telling stories that he could relate to, so he made a podcast to give us a platform.

Hall and I actually recorded a solo episode for me discussing my journey through my artistry. Through our conversation, he realized that there was a thread that tied many Black, Queer, American artists together; an intersectionality between our stories. At the end of my episode, he asked if I would host a special conversation between 3 other Black, Queer, men to shed a light on our stories specifically. As a white, British, man Hall did not feel that he was the correct person to spearhead this conversation, and our course I said YES!!!

The 3 gentlemen I had the honor of speaking with (in order of appearance) were Ty McKinnie, The IZM, and Sampson McCormick. The conversations were raw, powerful, and nourishing, to say the least. I went into it looking for brotherhood and understanding and left with so much more. Each of our journies was so unique to ourselves and yet there was an amazing connective tissue between us.

I cannot thank Dan, and all of the gentlemen, enough for telling their truth and using this opportunity to foster understanding. I pray that this podcast reaches each and every ear it needs to reach. This conversation is SO SO necessary and I hope there is a little Black, Gay, boy out there that finds themselves in us. Know that you are never alone, you are so loved, and there is a village out here that looks JUST like you!
